2013 BOY Winner: School Facility (Joey Ho Design)

Adults encourage kids to learn, but the kids just want to have fun. Preschool is where those two goals mingle, as Joey Ho demonstrated with a 7,500-square-foot instructional space where good-natured imagination is king. The palette is fresh, almost Scandinavian, mixing powder blue, chartreuse, white, and clear-finished blond wood. Many elements bring kids into dialogue with the world of grown-ups. For example, dual-height washbasins allow everyone to use the same restrooms, and cooking lessons take place in a professional-looking stainless-steel kitchen, scaled down. If tots need to speak to the staff member behind the reception desk, a short staircase brings them up to eye level. The whimsical centerpiece of the lunchroom is a structural column styled as a tree, supporting a mezzanine “tree house.” When teacher says it’s time to come back down, just take the slide.
