25 Things to See at Milan Design Week 2017

Salone del Mobile is just around the corner. Here is our guide to the design happenings taking over the city for Fuorisalone from April 4-9, 2017. See you in Milano!

1. Tokujin Yoshioka x LG

Tokujin Yoshioka will showcase "TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA x LG : S.F_Senses of the Future,” a large-scale light installation in collaboration with LG at Superstudio in Tortona. The showcase, featuring Yoshioka's new S.F. chair, uses state of the art technology to create a tapestry of light.

2. Passeggiata: An Airbnb Experience

Airbnb will present "Passeggiata: An Airbnb experience of Milan." Curated by Martina Mondadori Sartogo, "Passeggiata" will present interactive experiences for guests alongside an installation at the private home, Casa degli Atellani. Sartogo will curate the personal collections of renowned designers such as Dimore Studio and architect Roberto Bacciochi alongside vignettes of work from emerging designers.

3. Chromatography: The Colour World of Scholten & Baijings

"Chromatography: The Colour World of Scholten & Baijings" is an installation by Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings to debut their inaugural furniture collection for Herman Miller and three new textiles created in collaboration with Maharam.

4. space&interiors

Back for a second edition, space&interiors puts the spotlight on architectural finishes. Curated by Migliore+Servetto Architects, the exhibit will showcase interior surfaces, floors, doors, and finishes at The Mall—Porta Nuova in Milan’s Brera Design District. The “Absolute Lightness” exhibit shows how manufacturers embed the concept of weightlessness in their products.

5. RE:CHARGE Cafe by Humanscale and Todd Bracher

Humanscale and Todd Bracher are joining forces, bringing the RE:CHARGE café to Brera Design District for Milan Design Week. The green-filled pop-up café will feature biological lighting, charging stations, tasty "green shots," and free wifi. Humanscale products exhibited here will include the Trea multipurpose chair and the Vessel performance pendent light.

6. Caesarstone Presents Stone Age Folk by Jaime Hayon

Caesarstone returns to Palazzo Serbelloni to unveil "Stone Age Folk" by Jaime Hayon. Inspired by flora, fauna, and folklore from different cultures, Jaime Hayon designed an architectural pavilion, which combines over 48 Caesarstone colors with metal and stained glass and references the famous Crystal Palace built in Hyde Park, London for the Great Exhibition of 1851.

7. IKEA Festival

IKEA is transforming a warehouse in the heart of the Lambrate district into the “Let’s Make Room for Life” Festival to showcase the future of the living room and celebrate life at home.

8. Tom Dixon Presents MULTIPLEX

Tom Dixon brings "MULTIPLEX" to Milan in an iconic cinema on via Manzoni. Against the backdrop of 1950’s Italian glamour, the brand shows products of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. The enormous 840-seat cinema and historic galleria play host to a combination of culture, entertainment, and commerce.

9. Lee Broom Presents Time Machine

Celebrating a decade in design, Lee Broom will present a limited edition collection of furniture, lighting, and accessories from the past ten years all reimagined in a completely white color palette. Presented on a modernist interpretation of a fairground carousel set within the disused vaults of the Milano Centrale station, the installation will seamlessly combine design, drama, movement, and illumination.

10. Local Milan

Now in its second year, the Local Milan exhibition occupies the historic Oratorio della Passione on Piazza Sant’Ambrodgio. Conceived by Local Design—the Australian design hub and collective founded and curated by designer and stylist Emma Elizabeth—Local Milan is a showcase of 11 hand-picked studios and individuals representing the best of contemporary Australian design, including Dowel Jones (pictured).

11. EXCAVATION: Evicted by Paul Cocksedge

Friedman Benda will present British designer Paul Cocksedge’s latest project in Milan, in collaboration with Beatrice Trussardi. "EXCAVATION: Evicted" is a physical and visual reaction to Cocksedge’s eviction from his London studio due to property development. Cocksedge drilled down into the studio’s floor to excavate material that he then transformed into five distinct furniture pieces.

12. Everything Is Connected

Norway returns to Ventura Lambrate to present a fresh and far-reaching insight into the country’s culture of craft and design. Curated by designer and interior architect Katrin Greiling, "Everything is Connected" brings together the biggest contemporary talents in Norwegian design and craft to tell the story of the country’s creative scene today.

13. Adrian Cheng and Uchida Design Inc. Present Wander From Within

Adrian Cheng and Uchida Design Inc. present "Wander from Within," an exclusive design exhibition featuring an all-new artisanal furniture collection co-designed by cultural tastemaker Adrian Cheng, and award-winning Japanese master designer Shigeru Uchida.

14. COS x Studio Swine Present New Spring

COS has partnered with Studio Swine, an artistic collaboration between Japanese architect Azusa Murakami and British artist Alexander Groves. Drawing on the Sakura festival of Japan, the installation will center around a focal sculpture emitting mist-filled blossoms that burst and evaporate on contact with skin.

15. Republic of Fritz Hansen Presents Fritz Hotel

Republic of Fritz Hansen presents a magical place where the impassioned tropics meet the cool and minimalist North as a celebration of the long lasting and close cooperation between the fiery Spanish designer Jaime Hayon and the Danish manufacturer of timeless design.

16. Foscarini Presents Fare Luce
Foscarini is dedicating the entirety of its Brera space to a site-specific installation by architect Giovanni Maria Filindeu. Filindeu created six indoor and outdoor settings that aim to build evocative dimensions paced and structured through music. Each setting becomes a resonating chamber with distinct materials, proportions, and sound.

ARTDESIGN is an exhibition of works representing the highest level of handicraft from European and non-European countries. Curated by Euroinnovators, Venice Design Week, and co-produced by 5vie, its goal is to demonstrate how cultural diversities can influence and distinguish the creative process. It includes work by Lebanese designer Richard Yasmine, pictured.

18. WonderGlass Installation

WonderGlass will create a special lighting installation at the historical palazzo Istituto dei Ciechi, where the brand launched in 2013. On view will be new modular chandeliers by international design talent Marcel Wanders and creative director Gabriele Chiave that are inspired by Japanese calligraphy and created out of hand-blown Murano glass.

19. POLISH DESIGN. Tomorrow is Today

The SuperDesign show will feature an exhibition of design by Polish students from universities and academies across Poland. Curated by designer Dorota Koziara, the exhibition will be co-organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, under the brand Culture.pl and the Academic Design Center of the Strzeminski Academy of Art in Lódz.

20. Cassina 9.0

In celebration of the brand’s 90th anniversary, Cassina will host an interactive display designed by Patricia Urquiola to launch an anniversary book titled This Will be the Place. The installation will bring to life Cassina’s five different visions of the future of living. Pictured is Cassina's new Soft Props system by Konstantin Grcic.

21. Gianluca Pacchioni Installation

The Milanese metal sculptor and lighting designer Gianluca Pacchioni presents "Tropicality: A Matter of Sensorial Intentions," a solo installation of new works featuring explorations with molten metal.

23. Moooi Presents A Life Extraordinary

With hospitality in mind, Moooi creates an inviting atmosphere with extraordinary attention to detail. Photographer Levon Biss presents his intriguing microscopic insect portraits. Also on view: new wool carpets and a collaboration with Gentle Monster.

24. Marni Playland

Marni unveils a new collection of home furnishings in its showroom on Viale Umbria, which will be converted into Marni Playland, a playground filled with sand and children's toys.
