Milan Design Week 2018 Must-Sees

Salone del Mobile is just around the corner. Here is Interior Design's guide to the design happenings taking over the city for Fuorisalone from April 17-22, 2018.

1. Nendo: Forms of Movement

Collaborating with a number of Japanese manufacturers using special materials and technologies, nendo will present 10 concepts that revolve around the idea of movement, originating from an object's function, material or production process.

2. Norwegian Presence

Fifteen selected studios, designers, and craftspeople will come together to present products and prototypes ranging from furniture and textiles to sculpture and installation. Their work will be accompanied by exhibits from six of Norway’s most respected and exciting manufacturers.

3. Moooi Presents a Life Extraordinary

Megan Grehl and Concrete Architectural Associates will create two diverse worlds reflecting their philosophies and artistic visions. The Museum of Extinct Animals will occupy a third space in the presentation. Inspired by magnificent animal drawings, the Moooi team created a new collection of fabrics, leathers, wall coverings, and carpets that bring the extinct back to life.

4. Bar Anne

Bar Anne is designed by Space Encounters, an architectural firm from Amsterdam. The interior is created by some of the biggest break-out talents in Dutch design and the space will function as a show, bar, hang-out place, and creative hub serving aperitivo, dinner, and more.

5. Google Presents Softwear

Google debuts Softwear, an installation that brings to life the sensorial experience of hardware as envisioned by Ivy Ross, Vice President, Hardware Design at Google, and curated by trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort. The exhibition at Rossana Orlandi will feature a new lifestyle audiovisual and exhibition catalogue produced by Edelkoort, six one-of-a-kind wall hangings by Dutch designer Kiki van Eijk, and elements from an actual domestic interior that illustrate Google’s vision of the fusion of technology and lifestyle.

6. Caesarstone Presents Altered States by Snarkitecture

Caesarstone will unveil Altered States with Snarkitecture. The New York design practice looks to water as the most important ingredientin the kitchen, drawing inspiration from its changing states in nature (glacier, river, geyser) and in the kitchen (ice, water, steam) to create an immersive experience of a conceptual kitchen island.

7. 1stdibs Presents A New Breed

1stdibs will launch a gallery-style installation that will feature pieces by contemporary makers who blur the line between design and sculpture. The classical, Milanese-inspired exhibition will showcase a selection of new and custom pieces from artists, designers, and dealers—including Bec Brittain, Egg Collective, Editions Milano, and Maharam.

8. Masterly: The Dutch in Milano

The annual event dedicated to Dutch design and craftsmanship will offer an exhaustive panorama of contemporary Dutch production, featuring projects of emerging and established designers, companies, and schools in the fully restored Palazzo Francesco Turati.

9. Living Nature

Developed with Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA), the Salone del Mobile.Milano exhibition will feature a single space containing four natural, climactic microcosms that will enable all four seasons of the year to unfold at precisely the same time.

10. Foscarini Presents Reverse Room

Reverse Room is an installation created by the artist and architect James Wines, together with his daughter Susan Wines. In a room with dark walls, upside-down and obliquely tilted, furnished by monochrome tables and chairs, table lamps peer down from the ceiling, while hanging fixtures sprout from the floor with the aim of challenging our perception of space.

11. Really: Circular by Design

Invited by Really and Kvadrat, seven designers—Benjamin Hubert | LAYER, Christien Meindertsma, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Front, Jo Nagasaka, Jonathan Olivares, and Raw-Edges Design Studio—have made compelling designs that demonstrate the characteristics and possibilities of Really’s first materials made from upcycled end-of-life textiles.

12. Kohler Presents A Celebration of Modernism

Kohler will transform Milan’s famed Museo Bagatti Valsecchi into an experience that is both visually enticing and emotionally evocative. Guests will explore the spectrum of modernism—from minimalism to maximialism—as told through a series of artistic installations constructed from Kohler’s global products.

13. Typecasting: An Assembly of Iconic, Forgotten, and New Vitra Characters

An exhibition at the former sports arena La Pelota will present an expansive panorama of projects, products, and design studies by Vitra. Visitors will immerse themselves in the history, present, and future of the Swiss furniture company, as envisioned by curator Robert Stadler.

14. Swarovski Palazzo

Swarovski will present a site-specific installation in a grand greenhouse set within a hidden courtyard of a neo-classical Milanese palazzo. The showcase will unveil 2018 news from Atelier Swarovski’s home décor line, including new designer collaborations. There will also be new lighting collections, a pop-up Daniel’s Café, and a pop-up retail shop.

15. Peep O-Rama: The Furniture Show

Ferruccio Laviani celebrates his partnership with Emmemobili at the Dolce & Gabbana Metropol theater, for which he designed the interiors in 2005. The show will offer visitors a peek at some of the most iconic objects in the collection designed by the architect. The setup will make reference to the vintage iconography of burlesque theaters to underscore the sensual side of each project.

16. Historical Promiscuities: Works by Adam Nathaniel Furman

Curated by Luca Molinari, the exhibition held at the studio of Vudafieri-Saverino Partners will explore British artist Adam Nathaniel Furman's reinterpretation of history and architecture through shapes and color. On view will be ceramic works realized with Bitossi in an exclusive limited series, as well as pieces from the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London; and drawings, prints and videos made by Furman.

17. Le Roi by Marc Ange

Marc Ange collaborates with Sunbrella to present Le Roi, a monumental installation colored with fantasy and imagination in the garden space of Wallpaper* Handmade. Le Roi will be presented along with new Le Refuge lamps, which will be covered with Sunbrella fabric.

18. Cappellini Lounge

The Cappellini Lounge at Cappellini Point will feature an installation dedicated to S.Pellegrino's first design project, created in collaboration with Giulio Capellini. Three international designers—Neri&Hu, Steven Haulenbeek, and Philippe Nigro—will each conceive a different label for a limited-edition series titled The Journey of Water.

19. One Two Five

Antonia Jannone gallery will present an exhibition of works by Steven Holl, curated by Marco Sammicheli. The collection includes a sculpture cut from 21-million-year-old Lecce lime stone, original watercolors from the 1986 Porta Vittoria project, and a selection of Steven Holl’s watercolors from the last decade.

20. Beyond the Deep

Calico Wallpaper and Lindsey Adelman Studio will present a joint installation of new Calico Wallpaper Oceania murals alongside the new Lindsey Adelman Drop lighting system. The multi-room presentation will explore the effect of naturally occurring chemical reactions on surfaces and will immerse viewers into a dreamy world of alchemy and decay.

21. Hidden Garden

Florence studio Pierattelli Architetture will give the city an enchanting green space protected by a ring of panels that conceal it from the chaotic square outside. Inside, the panels are lined with mirrors that create a fascinating interplay of reflections, giving the sensation of an endless space in which abstraction and reality merge.

22. Ventura Future Presents FuturDome

FuturDome, the former meeting place of the Futurist movement, will showcase the future epoch of design in a first-time showcase organized by Ventura Future. Included in the presentation is the Hawa Beirut collection by Richard Yasmine.

23. HARU Stuck-On Design

At Ventura Centrale, Nitoms and SPREAD will explore how the color in the unused industrial warehouses under Milan Central Station impacts human emotions and the atmosphere. Nitoms proposes a new way of styling space by “sticking on color” with HARU stuck-on design to add a life to space and to influence people’s senses and sensibilities.

24. 1+1+1

The second edition of 1+1+1, a project by Elena Quarestani and curated by Marco Sammicheli, will explore the relationship between art, architecture, and design in the works of three different authors. An architect, an artist, and a designer—Johanna Grawunder, Antoni Malinowski, and Christoph Hefti—have been invited to make site-specific installations in the exhibition halls of Assab One.

25. Marni La Vereda

The Marni Vereda is a voyage into the colors and sensations of Colombia—it's a place where colors, tastes, and folklore are the backdrop to a new collection of furnishings and accessories of the brand that is enriched by new crafts and materials. The chairs on view explore unexpected forms; the backs open into striking peacock tails or take the shape of dreaming birds.
