They met in the most West Coast of ways. Designer Laura Gottwald has a daughter who surfs with Diana Mausser, who happens to be the founder of Native Tile & Ceramics. Their collaboration has now come ashore. While Mausser’s signature is California mission, Gottwald had Los Angeles mid-century on her mind. The two found common ground in Modernist, a line of 6-inch-square tiles and paired borders sparked by Case Study Houses and Frank Lloyd Wright drawings. The latter inspired Concentric, its circle-in-square motif reminiscent of Moorish architecture. Stripes, on the other hand, vertical and horizontal, can be specified in alternating colorways to create mesmerizing fields of color. Each handmade terra-cotta tile is kiln-fired, silk-screened with resist detail, hand-glazed, and then fired again.
