Cut into 6-inch-wide ribbons and wrapped on spools at the Glen Raven factory in North Carolina, Sunbrella solution-dyed acrylic awaited delivery to New York for the temporary installation Hop, Skip, Jump, and Fly: Escape From Gravity.
The ribbons were wound onto plastic or aluminum tubes and secured with small rivets.
Art installers carried the tubes to the site, a portion of the High Line not accessible to the public.
Sheila Hicks flew in from Paris to oversee the positioning of the tubes.
They were solidified with foam and attached to the train tracks.
Until March, the installation will thread through a section of the park where plants are self-sown and receive essentially no care.
