Paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams has selected “Poised Taupe” as the 2017 Color of the Year. The company reports that both homeowners and designers are slowly transitioning from using monochromatic grays to preferring warm, subtle hues of brown.
The brand’s annual National Home Design and Color Survey demonstrated that 40% of respondents—comprising both homeowners and designers—would ideally add warmer, cozier neutrals to their interiors, with preference given to taupe. “Consumers yearn for spaces that feel welcoming and hug them as they enter,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “Earthen brown combined with conservative gray, creating Poised Taupe, embodies all of these emotions.”
The commercial design industry is also embracing the shade. As the boundaries continue to blur between contract market sectors, the subtle complexity and neutral tones of Poised Taupe complement an inclusive range of aesthetics. “Since commercial color direction tends to enjoy longer lifecycles, Poised Taupe is on the forefront of this trend, offering the ability to endure over time, yet complement a range of designs,” Wadden says.
