You may recognize the name. Louise Despont, daughter of Interior Design Hall of Fame member Thierry, cites her father’s architecture books and watercolor plans, which filled her childhood home, as sources of inspiration for her artwork today. Other influences include Tibetan Buddhist paintings, Indian mandalas, and illustrated medical texts.
All inform her first solo show, “Energy Scaffolds and Information Architecture” at the Drawing Center in New York through March 20. To produce enough drawings to fill two enclosures built there—one a rectangle, the other an oval—she spent a year working in Bali, Indonesia. The final touch is the musical accompaniment, the gentle, hypnotic sound of gongs coming from Aaron Taylor Kuffner's robotic gamelatrons.
