Designers Gray Davis and Will Meyer with Chef Andrew Carmellini
The sleek confines of NYDC’s Keilhauer showroom offered a great stage for Gray Davis and Will Meyer of Meyer Davis Studio to begin their discussion with Chef Andrew Carmellini about their first collaboration, Locanda Verde in New York’s Greenwich Hotel. Not only did the designers work with dining star Carmellini, but they also kept property owner Robert DiNiro in the loop. The design pleased the client—and his Oscar-winning landlord—so much that the trio embarked on a Miami outlet of Carmellini’s haute-comfort SoHo haunt, the Dutch. Ensconced in the luxe interior of the W South Beach, Dutch is what Davis and Meyer called, “the hotel hangout.” The site also epitomizes their “magic matrix” of destination design: the axis between savvy travelers and hip locals. - May 1, 2012

Restaurant Design Series: David Rockwell and Danny Meyer
Culinary-minded design aficionados fit themselves into every available nook of the New York Design Center’s Dennis Miller Associates showroom to hear the conversation between Union Square Hospitality Group’s Danny Meyer and Rockwell Group’s David Rockwell. The two, who have developed a patter worthy of television’s talk-show circuit, spoke on a panel moderated by Interior Design editor in chief Cindy Allen at the recent NYDC Hospitality event
Meyer riffed that he approached Rockwell because one experience with bad design had been enough: “It’s like a bad joke, you only need to experience it once.” Meanwhile Rockwell addressed the theatrical nature of restaurant design and notions of authenticity, using the Gramercy Park Hotel’s Maialino and the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Untitled as examples. Getting them to talk about their upcoming project proved more difficult, with neither giving so much as a hint of what's to come.

It was only natural that spectacular sausage would be devoured at the New York Design Center’s Bright showroom where renowned chef Daniel Boulud discussed his projects with Design Bureaux’s Thomas Schlesser. Schlesser masterminded the interior of DBGB, Boulud’s first foray below 14th Street where an upscale brand of burgers and encased meats are the order of the day. “He understood me better than I understood myself,” said Boulud about Schlesser’s ability to translate his uptown brand to a downtown crowd. On Schlesser’s search for the perfect yellow to adorn the walls of their uptown collaboration, the Mediterranean-themed Boulud Sud, the chef admiringly said, “I love the obsession of the designer.” —Deborah Wilk

Designers and industry fans heeded the call of Interior Design to Check-In to 200 Lex for the fifth consecutive year to explore hospitality offerings at the New York Design Center. This year’s event offered a culinary theme as participants gathered at Gordon International for the first of four pairings—restaurateurs with their designers, that is—with Interior Design editor in chief Cindy Allen acting as the moderator.
Moving quickly from emerging to established talent, designer Stephanie Goto, whose projects include Paul Liebrandt’s Corton and New York’s Morimoto in conjunction with Tadao Ando, began the evening with George Mendes, chef of Midtown Manhattan’s Aldea. After sampling Mendes’s duck confit, listeners got the inside story on scouting and building New York restaurant space. Mendes felt a kinship with Goto whose design philosophy parallels his creation of signature dishes. “Minimal, with a focus on the food,” he called it. On the inevitable issue of client and designer conflicts, Goto told of holding her ground about rerouting the kitchen’s ventilation system to install one of her signature chandeliers, this one featuring over 500 acrylic rods. Mendes is now thankful for the designer’s insistence, adding: “It’s one of the most photographed elements of the interior.” —Deborah Wilk
