A steel-tube sculpture above the entry incorporates a welcoming “Hi.”
At the 111-acre campus of Chesapeake Energy Corporation in Oklahoma City, Elliott + Associates Architects set one of the mechanical-unit structures, which is sheathed in aluminum-composite panels and serves the new gray-brick Chesapeake Child Development Center at left, into a hillside.
A grid of rubber flooring and painted walls, the lobby features wall monitors for parents to check-in their children.
Each classroom has its own identifying letter plus a built-in bench at the threshold.
Steel-framed porthole windows and painted stripes animate a corridor.
The lobby’s foam cubes are by Quinze & Milan and the Niels Bendtsen lounge chairs have zip-off cotton covers.
The horizontal bands in the center’s masonry construction are ceramic tile.
A180-foot-long slightly ramped corridor addresses the site’s grade change.
Scooters are parked in sheds of corrugated poly carbonate.
Aluminum-composite panels with a baked-enamel finish enclose the structures housing the center’s mechanical systems.
Traffic-related graphics are incised in the rubber flooring.
Classrooms each have a maple loft play area and strips of grosgrain ribbon hanging down from the exposed ceiling joists.
Children’s art work is hung at their viewing level.
This quadrant links the corridor to the classrooms.
A safe room, in deference to Oklahoma’s weather, is built in to the hillside.
The children’s clinic has guest chairs by Verner Panton and a task chair by Fuse project.
Since the center takes children as young as 6weeks, there are three lactation rooms, each with a Mario Bellini chair and a stainless-steel sink and fittings.
