When the Desk Met Its Match
05/01/2012
In the beginning, there were desks. And offices masquerading
as assembly lines. Then, in 1968, with the world already in
the throes of social upheaval, a new concept forever revolutionized the workplace: the open-plan panel system. First put into service by corporations such as Intel as a hip hybrid of private and public space, these systems were later lampooned in the funnies and B comedies as an agent of micromanagement. But as the cubicle hit the big 4-0 in 2008, longevity got the last laugh.
While acknowledging forerunners, notably Haworth’s modular partitions, experts credit Herman Miller’s Action Office as the first to break the barrier. (Or build it.) The 1970’s saw Allsteel, Haworth, Knoll, and Steelcase launching their own systems, and HON followed in the ’80’s. By the ’90’s, the cubicle was the indisputable king, and it remains so today. We mark this glorious reign with a chronicle of how we got here from there—humbly adding a personal memo to Dilbert: Get used to it.
