Recognized as a leading authority on interior design education, the

Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA)

is an independent non-profit committed to the ongoing enrichment of the interior design profession. Every year thousands of students at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada graduate from CIDA-accredited programs and enter the design profession. The group’s standards, accordingly, have considerable influence on future practice. This November, a team of architects, designers, and educators selected by CIDA will convene at the Future Vision forum to update and develop the standards.

The list of participants

includes leaders from Jacksonville, Florida to Ottawa, Canada to Seattle, Washington. The results of Future Vision are projected to be used from 2017 to 2025, and the session will end with a description and prioritization of factors having the most influence on interior design in 5-10 years, as well as a look at how those factors will manifest themselves in practice. Participants will then determine how interior design higher education can best prepare graduates to address these factors, specifically focusing on emerging content.

According to a survey conducted by CIDA, changing interior environments are the top-ranked factor influencing the near future.

A CIDA Standards Revision Project Research summary notes

, “Social, cultural and economic forces are reshaping not only the design, but also the function and purpose of interior environments. Office spaces are getting smaller and more fluid; healthcare and senior living are becoming more like hospitality; hospitality is becoming increasingly experiential; homes, too, need to adapt to changing household demographics and, as work-live-play increasingly blur, are incorporating more multi-functional spaces.”

In short, future designers will need to develop new models for how interior environments support they way we live. CIDA is prepping to impact this next generation of design practice, and Future Vision hopes to lead the way.
