Soak In the Sun: 4 Houses Make the Most of Summer

These houses make the most of summer:

1. Firm: WMR Arquitectos

Location: Matanzas, Chile.

Standout:The pine-clad tripartite interior is brightened by skylights in a conical shape that references the giant ocean barnacles found locally.

2. Firm: Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects

Location: Petaluma, California.

Standout: An agrarian-inspired gable shelters the double-height living room, fronted by a glass wall incorporating barn-style doors.

3. Firm: McFarlane Green Biggar Architecture + Design

Location: Gambier Island, British Columbia.

Standout: Two near-identical volumes, with cedar roof decks, stack at right angles to form an off-the-grid house accessible only by water.

4. Firm: Andersson-Wise Architects

Location: Austin, Texas.

Standout:  An enamel-painted ceiling mural, derived from a kilim pattern, delights visitors looking up, while cypress planks underfoot extend from floor to deck.
