When is a chair more than just a chair? When it stars in an exhibit at the Los Angeles gallery of Edward Cella Art + Architecture. And it doesn't hurt if the designer also happens to be a scholarly collector who knows a thing or two about modernist architecture (he recently restored landmark houses by Paul Rudolph and Oscar Niemeyer). Michael Boyd chose to make the innovative Planefurniture suite-composed of simple chairs, tables, and desks that can be used indoors or out-sustainable, affordable, and local: L.A. craftsmen fabricate them with harvested, salvaged, and recycled woods. In Boyd's skilled hands, rudimentary planes become elegant. And options abound in the four systems that make up the suite. Each piece can be specifi ed by wood, size, and color. The collection is on view through June 16, and an illustrated catalogue accompanies the show. 323-525-0053; edwardcella.com.
