  • Pamela Sunday - Microbes

Every now and then, an artist's effort just falls flat. But for sculptor Pamela Sunday, that's a good thing. She has translated the natural properties of her 3-D bowls, vases, and objets into 4½-inch-square and 5-by-7- inch porcelain tiles. The patterns in the initial collection draw primary inspiration from microscopic life forms, reflecting a fascination Sunday has carried with her since she was a child exploring in the woods.
But while the references remain the same, the technique represents new territory. "The glazing needs to be done quickly and spontaneously," she says. Which is "more free and experimental compared to my sculpture work, where the process is premeditated and methodical." Intended for wall applications, the tiles are hand decorated with numerous layers of glaze, then fired multiple times.
Sunday's embrace of biology is obvious in designs such as Spores, Microbes, and Biosphere, but she also dabbles in psychiatry with Rorschach. Because all are produced by hand, every tile is unique, although custom sizes and designs are available by commission. 646-643-4101; pamelasunday.com.

  • Peter Glassford - Collage

After receiving a BFA in sculpture at the University of Texas at Austin, Peter Glassford honed his carpentry skills in Mexico and eventually turned to high-end furniture. Now he divides his time between San Antonio and Guadalajara, but he's obviously not forgotten his schooling. After gathering randomly shaped pieces of wood and discarded cutoffs from furniture factories, Glassford assembles his übersculptural Collage wall tiles to the client's specifications. A choice of two woods, ranging in thickness from ¾ to 2 inches, can be applied to the plywood substrate: Parota, a redwood-like tropical variety, or Rosa Morada, a species similar to rosewood. Finished with nitrocellulose matte lacquer and a wax topcoat, the tiles can be left natural or colored brown, charcoal, gold, or white. 956-337-5377; peterglassford.com.

  • Ixxi - Loco

Studio Boot has been busy shuffling decks. And the result is Loco, a decorative wall-covering system for Ixxi. The Netherlands graphic-design house devised the kit of 50 cards, each 8 inches square, with both sides printed with dueling triangles. Simply use the I- and X-shape fasteners-yes, that's where the company got its name-and connect according to your whim. Use hanging strips for wall applications or attach to a frame for a room divider. Made of high-grade synthetic paper, the waterproof cards resist ripping, curling, UV rays, and static and come in two colorways, yellow and pink. ixxidesign.com.
