Enlisted to find a manufacturer for the KAA Design Group's sustainable furniture prototypes, Keith Granet of the Los Angeles-based Granet Associates could have just taken the 405 freeway to the factory and headquarters of Cisco Brothers. However, it wasn't until he'd flown six hours to North Carolina's High Point Market that he made the connection. KAA was then able to go to work on a nine-piece debut, Hom Escape in Style. Simple and purposeful became buzzwords for the seating and tables, all handcrafted from a Forest Stewardship Council—certified Guatemalan hardwood, machiche. Outdoor-worthy treated linen covers the cushions on the Wima ottoman as well as a coordinating chaise longue and armless sectional. Straightforwardness defines the circular Euroa cocktail table and the square Darri side table, which combines a machiche frame with a limestone top. And the Alkira armchair reads "rustic" when laced with leather or nylon-polypropylene.

Designing her Ivy collection, Paola Navone considered classic topiaries, then constructed the five pieces from steel mesh and rods in a number of powder-coated colors. Design is often improvisation, a veritable next-of-kin to the spontaneous riffs of Satchmo, Lady Ella, and Trane. It was that parallel that inspired Kate Korten to channel her partiality for upbeat prints and assertive colors into Improv, a 10-pattern set for the Aláxi brand at Silver State. But what's key about this textile homage to jazz culture is that the jam session takes place in the open air—as solution-dyed acrylic wovens prevent Korten's bold vision from fading away in the sun or rain.

Ad-libs begin with Hop, scattered with stylized frogs. Flourishes take a free-flowing path in Noodlin. The after-midnight groove resounds in a trio of musically themed efforts: oversize linear Boogie, striped Bebop, and the inevitable Jazz, an abstraction of a star. And Jive looks like a syncopated take on piano keys. The gig closes with two patterned chenilles and two solids, one a chenille and the other a flat-weave.
