In his senior year of high school, Maximilian Michael Eicke got the opportunity to pursue a creative dream. The German-born talent chose to envision a Bauhaus-inspired coffee table that he'd been prototyping. That experience was emboldening; Eicke went on to study interior architecture at Dublin's Griffi th College and embark on a metalworking apprenticeship with Polenz in Leudinghausen, Germany. Talk about precocious: At just 20, two weeks after graduating, Eicke founded his own furniture business. The young upstart's first client? His parents, antiques dealers Michael and Elfi Eicke, who subsequently showcased his debut collection at their high-end gallery, the Christy's Art Center in Sag Harbor, New York. "The juxtaposition of classic furnishings with my hard-edge, minimalist pieces shows how well they mesh," says the designer. Now 22, he's introduced some 45 clean-lined designs that give geometric forms an artful twist. Consider Emma, a sleek desk with plenty of nooks to stash papers and supplies, or his Mr. Chris lounge, with hints of Gerrit Reitveld. Many pieces multitask, such as the T tables, which stack to form storage units. In a return to his roots, all pieces are manufactured in Germany.
