These are rocky times for Ken Gangbar. When Interior Design Hall of Famer David Rockwell needed a dramatic wall treatment to punctuate the lobby of the Se Hotel (now the Hotel Palomar San Diego), he drew upon Gangbar's aptitude for imagination and fabrication. Contractors carved five recessed channels into a 30-foot-wide expanse of wall, then finished them in concrete. Next, the Toronto-based sculptor and his crew embarked on the laborious task of hand-assembling the 3,700 porcelain and marble "stones" to cascade into 25-foot-high currents.
