Vanguard Furniture - Greek Peak
Thom Filicia has always designed custom furnishings for private clients, but he casts a much wider net with this adroit entry into the retail sector. The fearless eclecticism that rules the house of Filicia now informs his 67 pieces for Vanguard Furniture. The whole-home namesake line freely blends federalist with futurist. "It's evocative design that's both comfortable and highly practical," he says. Case goods in walnut and oak feature a variety of painted finishes. His imagination is particularly unfettered in the spiraling Solvay side table in hand-forged iron with a blackened-silver finish. Other designs nail it with nail heads: the leather-wrapped Eastwood side table, the beech Greek Peak klismos chair, and the Robineau Road mirror. The latter two sport his Kravet fabrics, with Napoli Citrine linen wrapping the mirror's frame and Whitnel Citron polyester gracing the chair's seat. 888-668-4546; vanguardfurniture.com. circle 405
Vondom - Mesa 60, Tumbona
It's no sweat for neutrals to withstand open-air extremes, but saturated tones are generally fair-weather friends. Boldly defying conventional outdoor wisdom, however, Vondom 's Jut furniture is made of low-density polyethylene rotation-molded to retain its vividness no matter how punishing the elements. Strong lines and seamless silhouettes provide ideal canvases for the nine-color palette: steel, white, pistachio, pink, red, orange, and black in addition to ocher and Ice. Seating is scaled with ergonomics in mind, while optional sailcloth-covered cushions offer extra comfort. All pieces have holes to aid rainwater drainage, and the entire assortment is recyclable.
The solidly proportioned Butaca armchair, basically a cube, finds a stylistic sister in the straightforwardly named Sofa. Slenderness prevails in the stackable Silla side chair. Most languorous of the seating is the Tumbona chaise, which has legs similar to those on the cocktail table Mesa 60, available as a square or a rectangle. 34-96-290-10-88; vondom.com. circle 416

Four Hands - Adrian
After dropping out of law school in Los Angeles, Thomas Bina went to Indonesia to find himself. Instead, he found his craft: making furniture by hand. He then returned to L.A. and established Eclexion Design, later renamed Environment Furniture. His deconstructivist frames exuded a just-sawn immediacy. Literally cutting-edge— where reclaimed Brazilian hardwoods were concerned—his work was sustainable before it was chic.
Ever the entrepreneur, Bina has moved on again, this time to a collaboration with his old friend Brett Hatton, a Brit who'd founded the furnishings importer and manufacturer Four Hands after his own coming-of-age trip to South Asia. The company now has an independent brand, called simply Bina, launched with 85 pieces.
Walnut and white oak mix with eight South American hardwoods, all reclaimed and in the raw. "There are so many applications for reclaimed wood," Bina says. Screws and nails are supplanted by dovetail, tongue-and-groove, and mortise-and-tenon joints. Artful frames snub symmetry in the Page cocktail table, made from telephone-pole wood; the Oscar table and Greta console, both in louro preto and canafistula; and the Adrian dresser, an amalgamation of four exotic species. Repurposed canvas, which once served as tarps for Brazilian trucking, upholsters the seating. Available in eight colorways. 866-654-9433; fourhands.com. circle 407

Rug Company - Tube
His guerrilla aesthetic and rebel attitude have engendered a swarm of flamboyantly progressive furnishings. But not until now has he turned his gaze to the floor. Fortunately, Tom Dixon has an experienced partner calling him to the carpet. The Rug Company, already the floor-covering facilitator for designs stars from Arad to Zeisel, is now launching the straightforwardly named series, Tom Dixon for the Rug Company.
Dixon's muse for the four-pattern debut is decidedly old-school, TV test patterns from the analog era. Aggressive geometrics repeat in varied colors, dancing against black grounds. The irony of choosing electronic imagery, only to have it hand-knotted in Tibetan wool by artisans in Nepal, wasn't lost on Dixon. "Working on a computer screen, it's impossible to predict the effect of light and shade on the pile," he adds. "The joy and surprise is in unrolling the samples for the first time and seeing your idea, which you have previously experienced only in a pixellated 15-inch format, transformed into a massive, luminous plane of color."
The patterns have self-explanatory names: Beam, Step, Tile, Tube. Sizes are 6 by 9 feet, 8 by 10, and 9 by 12 in addition to custom dimensions. Coordinating cushions come in handwoven wool. 800-644-3963; therugcompany.info. circle 436
