May is the month for design in New York, but perhaps the most cutting-edge talent is over the bridge, in Brooklyn. Juried design event BKLYN Designs will be held May 9-11 in DUMBO. This year the show clocks in bigger than ever, with 68 exhibitors and three full days of speaking engagements and seminars.
A high-caliber list of industry professionals will participate in the Target Designer Speakers Series, sponsored by retailer Target. Bent wood designer Sami Hayek will deliver the keynote address on Friday, May 9, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The roster also includes Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of ApartmentTherapy.com (Saturday, May 10 from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.); and Dave Alhadeff, owner and creator of design retailer The Future Perfect (Sunday, May 11, 3 P.m. - 4p.m.) Visit BKLYN Designs for a complete list.
Want to take home your own piece of Brooklyn? Shopping destination BKLYN DESIGNS +, a design accessories mart is back for its second year. Featuring Brooklyn-made home and fashion accessories, the mart will be held at the Tobacco Warehouse in Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, 26 New Dock Street. Other activities include an opening celebration (Friday May 9 at Design Within Reach, 76 Montague Street) and an exhibit of student work for sale from the Pratt Institute.
In addition to the Tobacco Warehouse, the show will be held at: Dumbo Arts Center, 30 Washington Street; Smack Mellon, 92 Plymouth Street; and St. Ann’s Warehouse, 38 Water Street.
Tickets are $15 ($10 for students with I.D.) or $12 in advance online.
