Big Name Designers Create Eco Products

The designers will use water-jet technology to create complicated patterns in the minimal pieces.

by Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 3/28/2008

Los Angeles-based design firm Orange22 Design Lab has retained eight major design players to come up with eco products to launch at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York this spring.

Dubbed the Blank Canvas project, the initiative asks each designer to create a new edition of the firm's indoor-outdoor Botanist furniture--which includes a cocktail, end table, and bench with surface patterns cut with water-jet technology. Orange 22 will donate an amount equivalent to each designers' royalty to a social cause of their choice.

The participants are: Yves Béhar of Fuseproject (San Francisco); Margo Chase of Chase Design Group (Los Angeles); Milton Glaser of his namesake firm (New York); Kahi Lee of Kahi Lee Lifestyle (Los Angeles); Karim Rashid of his namesake firm (New York); Joe Ricchio of Ricchio Design (Seal Beach, California); Massimo and Lella Vignelli of Vignelli Associates (New York); and Claude Zellweger of One & Co (San Francisco).

"When we began thinking about the Botanist Blank Canvas project two years ago, we knew we wanted to produce more than furniture," says Dario Antonioni. "Botanist is simply a unique business model that serves as a catalyst to empower design for positive change."
