Michael Graves Leads Education Fundraising Campaign

The architect, who is paralyzed, has first-hand knowledge of the importance of universal design.

by Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 2/27/2008

For people with disabilities, universal design is life-altering. To help hone rising talent and develop new solutions, the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) has launched the Beyond Architecture Campaign, a fundraising initiative supporting student design and construction projects. Architect Michael Graves is honorary chair of the campaign, and the nation-wide community service initiative it supports, Freedom by Design,

"My passion is great design,” says Graves. “I am dedicated to providing great design to people with disabilities." Graves is well aware of the importance of design in daily life: In 2003, he was paralyzed from the chest down after an infection.

Graves will help the AIAS reach its $2 million minimum fundraising goal. The funds will support membership and program goals for Freedom by Design, a nation-wide community service initiative underway at more than 30 colleges and universities. Through Freedom by Design, students design for low-income individuals with disabilities, addressing safety, dignity, and comfort. To date, the AIAS has secured $1 million in commitments.

Select students from five colleges and universities will earn the opportunity to work with Graves and his firm this Spring.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the AIAS is a student-run, independent, non profit organization with 140 AIAS chapters worldwide.
