Zaha Hadid Lands Michigan Museum

Once completed, the museum will be Hadid's second realized project in the U.S.

by Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 1/22/2008

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid has landed the commission for the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. Located in East Lansing, Michigan, the 41,000-square-foot contemporary art museum is slated to open in 2010.

The commission was awarded after a high-profile design competition; other finalists included Coop Himmelb(l)au (Vienna and Los Angeles); Morphosis (Santa Monica, California); Kohn Pedersen Fox Architects, PC (New York); and Randall Stout Architects (Los Angeles). The competition was launched after Eli and Edythe Broad donated $26 million to the museum project.

The three-story steel and concrete museum will feature an aluminum and glass exterior and an outdoor sculpture garden. It will be Hadid's second realized project in the U.S.

"I believe we can create buildings that evoke original experiences, inspire people and make them excited about new ideas," says Hadid. "The sculptural folds of the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum's design and enigmatic qualities of its steel and glass surface follow a coherent formal logic, offering a sense of unlimited possibilities."

Construction will begin this Fall.
