Modernism Gears up in New York

A preview and awards ceremony will be held November 16.

From November 17-20, New York’s Park Avenue Armory is the premier destination for 19th and 20th century design. The venue will once again dish up a gathering of 65 international dealers for Modernism: A Century of Style & Design, sponsored by Sanford L. Smith & Associates. The 21st edition of the show will feature new exhibitors, an awards ceremony, and a preview of Richard Meier’s rising development in Brooklyn.

Wares on view and for sale hail from movements such as Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Wiener Werkstätte, Memphis, Bauhaus, and the 1950s to 1990. Among the new exhibitors are Phurniture (NYC), Connor o Rosenkranz (NYC), Casati (Chicago), Galere (West Palm Beach), Modernity (Stockholm), and Tony Subal (Vienna).

On November 16, a preview will be held, with proceeds benefiting the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Three awards will be bestowed during the preview: The Brooklyn Museum/Modernism Lifetime Achievement Award, Design and Commerce Award, and Young Designer Award. For more information or tickets, call 718-501-6423.

Meier’s new 15-story glass building On Prospect Park, expected to open in Fall of 2008, will feature 114 one-to-four-bedroom condos. Prices, starting at $790,000, could reach as high as $6 million. An architectural model and designs for the luxury tower will be displayed at the Armory for the duration of Modernism.

Admission to Modernism is $15 per day, and includes a catalog. Student and group rates are available. For more information call 212-777-5218, or email info@sanfordsmith.com.
