Flight of Imagination

by Karen D. Singh -- Interior Design, 11/1/2006

In addition to countless building projects, SOM has two Valli & Valli product collections positioned for introduction next year. Part of the company's Fusital series of hardware, they'll be launched at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan: door knobs and pulls, coat hooks, window handles, and more. The Ver collection, featuring a more sinuous look, is by partner Ross Wimer and associate Colin Franzen of the firm's Chicago office; the more angular items in Rev are by New York's interiors partner Stephen Apking and associate Claes Appelquist. The two duos employed automotive-industry computer software to give the objects complex curves that are especially satisfying in the hand. Both of the teams then experimented with molded-plastic models to emulate the feel and weight of the actual pieces, which will ultimately be rendered in polished and brushed stainless steel. Products available for order in May. 150 East 58th Street, New York, NY 10155; 877-326-2565; vallievalli.com. circle 324
