Adam Tihany
While Adam Tihany's renown can perhaps be described in a single sentence, the scope of his work and a detailing of geographic locales would fill a small book. Born in Transylvania in 1948, Mr. Tihany was raised in Israel. After his requisite three year service in the Israeli army, he moved to Milan to attend the Politecnico di Milano, School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Upon graduating, Mr. Tihany apprenticed in several design studios throughout Europe, acquiring experience in furniture, lighting, product and interior design. Quite simply, Mr. Tihany may well be America's pre-eminent restaurant designer today. In New York, it was he who defined the upscale trattoria and brasserie with his own restaurant Remi and with Malvasia, Bice (worldwide), Metro and Nicole. As a premier hospitality designer, Mr. Tihany has created some of the most highly acclaimed designs including the world famous four-star Le Cirque 2000 and Jean Georges restaurants, both in New York; the renowned Gundel in Budapest; Wolfgang Puck's Spago Las Vegas, Chicago, Mexico City and Palo Alto; Osteria del Circo for the Maccioni family in New York; Monte's four-story private club in London; the Dan Eilat Hotel & Resort in Eilat, Israel; Baretto in Paris; New York's Shun Lee Palace Chinese restaurant; Inagiku Japanese restaurant and Oscar's, both at the Waldorf-Astoria New York, as well as numerous residential, corporate and retail spaces including Moschino's flagship boutique on Madison Avenue. Other projects include: the renovation of the historic King David Hotel in Jerusalem; The Time boutique hotel in New York; Le Cirque and Circo at the Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas; Chef Thomas Keller's Bouchon bistro in Napa Valley; Charlie Palmer's Aureole at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas (with the illustrious Wine Tower); the one Michelin star Foliage, Park Cafe and the Bar at the Mandarin-Oriental Hotel, Hyde Park, London; the Sea Grill at Rockefeller Center; and One CPS at the Plaza Hotel, New York.
Mr. Tihany has completed the redesign of Fred Leighton Estate Jewels on Madison Avenue and Artisanal, a bistro for Chef Terrance Brennan. As curator and designer of the 4,000 square meter GrandHotelSalone exhibit at the Milan Furniture Fair, Mr. Tihany invited 10 internationally renowned architects including Toyo Ito, Richard Meier and Jean Nouvel to design the "hotel room of the future within his full-functional boutique hotel lobby including the GHS Restaurant with 3 superstar chefs.
Projects in 2002 include the French Laundry for Chef Thomas Keller and the Columbus Bar, both at the AOL Time Warner Center in New York; five projects for the Boscolo Group in Budapest, Prague, Nice and in Rome including a complete renovation of a boutique hotel at San Basilio in the heart of Rome; restaurants Lafite and the Coffee Garden at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpus, Malaysia and hangar One, a private jet club in Scottsdale, AZ.
Mr. Tihany also has licensed lines of furniture and accessories for various companies. The Pace Collection offers four successful collections of his residential furnishings, including the Le Cirque and Monte's Collections. Villeroy & Boch has produced many of Tihany's custom-designed chinaware for restaurants, as well as Tihany's popular silver-plated cigar holders and ashtrays. In 1998, Christofle Silver of Paris began production of Mr. Tihany's famous "Bombay Sapphire Martini Glass". To follow it's fantastic success, Christofle will release the extensive Barware Collection 3000 and the Judaica Collection in 2002. Other products on the market include chairs for McGuire Furniture of San Francisco, a unique fiber optic landscape lighting fixture by Lucifer Lighting; door hardware from Valli & Valli; a new form of china from Schonwald Porcelain of Germany, a collection of rugs for M&M Design International and hospitality linens for Frette. Christofle flatware and lamps for Baldinger and for Sirmos are now available.
Mr. Tihany's expertise, however, is not limited to restaurants. He has designed the Doubletree Inn in Santa Clara, CA; presidential suites at Bally's Park Place Casino Hotel in Atlantic City; the Drake Swissotel, NY; in shop and showroom design, he has created Bottega Veneta boutiques in New York, Beverly Hills and Venice, Italy, as well as showrooms for Versace and the menswear company Lazo. He has designed elegant residences and has designed a 20,000 sq. ft. house in Orlando. And he has designed for Trocadero, Foscarini and Pace.
