The rubber hits the road for Smart Car's EV, following in the recent success of other all-electric vehicles like Nissan's Leaf and Chevy's Volt. This makes a lot of sense, given the compact and forward-thinking efficiency of the Smart Car. So far, only 250 of the EVs, dubbed the "Smart ForTwo", will be launched this year, with the official nationwide release coming in 2012. But in the m... Read More

Modeled after nutrition labels on food, the Lighting Facts labels are designed to help buyers save money by selecting more efficient bulbs.  Wattage, the amount of energy a bulb uses, is being replaced by lumens, which measure brightness as the defining metric. Emily Pilloton

One Good Chair 2010 Competition, a design context focused on sustainability, asked entrants to "do more with less." While I wonder if we seriously need any more chairs in this world, the competition is more of a thought provocation that uses a vernacular object to talk about material conservation, ergonomically appropriate design, and emotional relationships we have with our objects. The... Read More

Emily Pilloton
Posted by Emily Pilloton on 2011-01-31 15:29:08

The amount of superfluous packaging in almost everything these days is appalling, and cardboard, with is rigidity, falls "flat" (pun intended). Designer Patrick Sung, however, is proposing a new cardboard product that bends and morphs to fit even the oddest-shaped object. With the cardboard's triangular perforations, the cardboard sheets (which as sheets can be flat-packed to their pack... Read More

The headquarters of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis, Maryland is the only building to have earned a Platinum rating from the US Green Building Council's LEED Rating System.  Oh wait, I wrote that in 2001, when the Philip Merrill Environmental Center was in fact, the greenest building in America. I fell in love then and I still am even though, at 10, she's an old lady in green building... Read More

Hertz Rents its First Chevy Volt

Emily Pilloton
Posted by Emily Pilloton on 2011-01-25 13:33:00

I don't own a car, but I do find myself having to rent occasionally, which is supremely frustrating given the cost and lack of responsible choices (somehow I always end up in a way-too-big minivan: "Ms. Pilloton, we've upgraded you for free!"). In December, though, Hertz announced that it would implement the nation's first electric vehicle rental program with a fleet of all-electric Chev... Read More
