Shipwreck Furniture

South African designer Nic Kruger is turning flotsam and jetsam into tables and chairs. Years ago, he stumbled upon a wrecked boat, named the Kunene, and fell in love with the patinas of her siding. The moment provided the inspiration for his company, Shipwreck Furniture, which now produces one-of-a-kind furniture pieces out of wood scavenged from old boats. Whether a bench or a table or chair, e... Read More

Branch LED Outdoor Lights

Posted by Emily Pilloton on 2011-03-17 13:05:00

A few years ago, my parents upgraded the mushroom-shaped lights along their frontyard pathway to solar-powered LED lights. They're very efficient, but not all that aesthetically pleasing. Enter Branch from Modular Lighting Instruments, an LED light for outdoor use that is reminiscent of the flora amongst which it sits. The "caricature-esque" form that mimics a piece of a tree branch is... Read More

What a Bright Idea!

Emily Pilloton

Even though some argue that the CFL bulb is "so 2008" and that it's high time we move onto LEDs, a CFL is still a much wiser choice than the now antiquated incandescent. Belarusian industrial design firm Solovyovdesign has come up with an aesthetic that makes this sentiment even more obvious: the CFL bulb as human brain. Playing off of the old good idea as lightbulb over your head, the... Read More

Posted by Emily Pilloton on 2011-03-14 15:40:00

This is a competition worth entering: Autism Connects asks design students from around the world to conceive of an innovative technology-based solution to assist individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), while at the same time increase public understanding of ASD and those who live with it. The grand prize is $5,000 for an individual or team, and the top 3 designs will receive $1,000 prize... Read More

RecycleMatch

It's true: one person's trash is another's treasure. I recently saw a piece on CBS Sunday Morning about a woman who creates amazing art--think DaVinci's "Last Supper"--from dryer lint. But I digress. RecycleMatch has taken the trash to treasure concept B2B as it brings together buyers who want materials and companies who would rather not send their waste to the landfill but rather reuse,... USGBC Releases Home Scoring Tool

Emily Pilloton
Posted by Emily Pilloton on 2011-03-10 13:44:00

It's common knowledge that the best way to start cutting back on resources is to first monitor and measure your usage. Now the USGBC has launched the latest tool to measure your home's "greenness," and measure it up against the LEED for Homes green building program. The web-based LEED for Homes Scoring Tool is free, and uses a Credit-By-Credit or Quick Score system to easily illustrate... Read More

LEED-CI: 1873 projects; 78,464,155 GSF

Yup, you read that right. To date 1,873 projects have certified under LEED-CI representing 78,464,155 gross square feet. Amazing. Recently I've had reason to dig through old files and take a trip or two down memory lane. LEED-CI was birthed in 1999 when the USGBC Board of Directors authorized a small group of volunteers to begin writing a rating system for commercial interiors. It wasn't an entire... Read More

Floorboards with Natural Lines

Emily Pilloton
Posted by Emily Pilloton on 2011-03-08 13:35:00

While straight-edged floorboards are easy to install and technologically logical, a new Dutch Company, Bolefloor, has a new take: use the natural curves of the wood to dictate how floor boards fit together. The method results in less cut wood waste and increasing the output from a single tree. The method has been in use previously by a few craftsmen, but the company believes that it is worthy of... House Within a Garden in Belgium

There are ivy-covered buildings, and then there's this beauty: a Chia-pet-style vertical garden-clad live work space in Linkebeek, Belgium. The structure, designed by Samyn and Partners and took 8 years to build. Originally, the walls were to be covered with ivy and topped off by a copper roof, but the long-drawn-out construction timeline was a blessing in disguise, as the fully green facade emer... Darrell Schmitt's Villa Versare: Beachside Platinum

Penny Bonda
Posted by Penny Bonda on 2011-03-04 15:13:48

Darrell Schmitt is an extraordinarily talented interior designer. His firm's projects include the Montage Beverly Hills and Newport Beach's Resort at Pelican Hill. He is also, I must confess, a good friend of long-standing and I was delighted to learn that he had designed a vacation home for himself. I expected gorgeous but was happily surprised to also find LEED for Homes Platinum. The 3,000 squa... Read More

Architect Barbie

Many of you may have already seen this floating around the blogosphere, but it was too good to pass up a comment or two. The latest from Mattel's infamous Barbie collection is the much-anticipated Architect Barbie, a creative, hip Barbie toting her hard hat and construction documents (but wearing high heels, which seems like fodder for cat calls and falling over I-beams a at a construction site)....  Woo-hoo! February's over. Much as we love Valentine's Day we're happy to see it go. In many parts of the country, including mine, it's the last full winter month. Welcome March and the spring equinox, to be quickly followed by April's cherry blossoms and Save a Sample!, the design industry's recycling drive. The New York based drive is expanding its reach this year into Boston, Chicago, Philadel... Read More
