Architect Barbie
Many of you may have already seen this floating around the blogosphere, but it was too good to pass up a comment or two. The latest from Mattel's infamous Barbie collection is the much-anticipated Architect Barbie, a creative, hip Barbie toting her hard hat and construction documents (but wearing high heels, which seems like fodder for cat calls and falling over I-beams a at a construction site). The doll was co-created by the American Institute of Artists, and comes as part of their "I Can" initiative, showcasing Barbie in various high-power careers and encouraging young girls to be any career they set their mind to. One major critique I would have is the pink plastic house, which I hope is not the standard of innovative architecture our Architect Barbie is building. Regardless of your thoughts on Barbie, I suppose I at least have to give three cheers for the representing of our own industry. Would love your thoughts on this one.

I love these tree houses. I live in Chch, with a hoaldiy house in the Sounds and so drive pass this lodge on every trip (I couldn't tell you how many times they've almost killed me trying to get a better look while driving :) )Their situation is perfect, also, facing out to the sea on a lovely rugged part of the Kaikoura Coast. One day soon we're going to stop over and stay the night there.

It would be a easier to fit Barbie with comfortable flat shoes if Mattel were to produce a flat-footed young woman. She might have more fun at the beach and playing sports too. I don't mind the glasses. They're not really hip, but yes, common these days, at least among the men. The dress is just plain silly, for any age and any profession, a bit rodeo-like maybe. A nice pair of brown pants and light pink shirt with the jacket might work.

oohhh, she is quit, I think it is perfect that she is well dressed and has the constructionpapers with her. Then you can see she has a nose for design and she dresses well!!

Black Pant Suit with Black Turtleneck and green Doc Martens would have worked better with the rectilinear glasses....and a tiny green tape measure would have been nice too....to match her Docs, since Barbie is so fashion forward.

The outfit will surely distract the workers (cleavage and the chance to see underwear are lethal). Steel toe boots are a must (not heels). Imagine her climbing scaffolding. "I can" make accidents happen more in the office and on site. She should have a Windows base tablet PC and sketchpad to show that she can design.

It is so wonderful to see girls being encouraged to pursue architecture. In the late 60's when I was in high school and even into the 1980's it was still considered a male's only club. I do agree, however, we need to get away from the blond, short skirt, low top perspective for a woman's appearance.

She's cute and some girls will have fun playing with her. Obviously, women Architects don't wear strapless dresses and high-heel boots to work. (It's not suited for climbing ladders and and construction sites or bending over reviewing a set of drawings). I think this Barbie looks more like Interior Designer Barbie (no offense to Interior Designers, but they normally dress more 'hip' than Architects). Also, in reference to calling Architecture as being a 'high powered career' is a stretch. The fact of the matter is teachers and police (and a whole lot of other people) get paid FAR more than Architects do, especially now with so many unemployed. We should be honest about the Architecture profession and that you become an Architect because you love it and not because of money or power (that is perceived, it is not based in reality). Perhaps if you want kids to be Architects, you give them a set of blocks.

I just have to say I'm a little disappointed with the use of Hipster glasses on Architect Barbie which seems to make the assumption that all designers are now hipsters. As a designer myself I do not fall into that category and think it is an over reaching generalization. However I do still like her and will still probably add her to my collection of architecture related toys

There is a rendering of a pink skyscraper shown in the Moroso article in Today's Daily Fix on the homepage. Perhaps "pink" is the new "green" in architecture! ;-)
