Art From the Ordinary

February 14, 2011

Kevin VanAelst

Kevin Van Aelst is a Connecticut-based artist with a sense of humor and love of the ordinary (with a twist). His photographs show the most ordinary of objects (apples, bananas, rolls of tape, cardboard boxes) altered into something that transcends their usual selves. Using wit and an Exacto knife, Van Aeist is able to show the usual in a creative light (an apple as globe, a roll of tape as shark-filled ocean scene. In some cases, the work carries a more critical dialog, like a photograph of Wonderbread that he used to speak to the cultural use of the term "whitebred." He describes, "The images aim to examine the distance between the ‘big picture' and the ‘little things' in life - the banalities of our daily lives, and the sublime notions of identity and existence," he says. Check out his work on his website here.
