A Greener Holiday Tree (for the bookworm in you)

December 13, 2010
Gleeson Library Tree

Last year, I managed to convince my family to not buy a cut Christmas tree, but instead a potted tree that they could then plant after the holidays (which they did, and it is still thriving in their front yard). This year, I'm hoping to take their Christmas-tree-greening up a notch by challenging them to build one out of ordinary objects around the house (there is certainly enough junk in the garage!). One inspiring tree I came across was that of the Gleeson Library in San Francisco, made from stacks of a bunch of their own books (which happen to be green). With a little strategic stacking, the tree even has mini-shelf spots for ornaments and other adornments. Plus, at the end of the season, the books can just be unstacked and put right back on the shelves. I'm hoping this design will inspire my family's tree this year.

We love this idea! You can do this at home with recycled boxes and wrapping paper!

I love this tree but who has so many books all the same size and thickness? Too fun!

I LOVE this idea of a tree made of books. Very creative. But, Im more interested in getting a potted christmas tree. I have heard that there are companies that deliver a potted christmas tree to your home, and when your done with it, they pick it up and take it somewhere to be planted. That sounds amazing..but I cant find a company that does it in LA where I live.
