Birdhouses as Roof Tiles

November 9, 2010

Klaas Kuiken

We've seen the clever technology of embedding solar cells into the vernacular roof tile, but here's a more poetic option: turn a few of your standard roof tiles into a home for your avian friends. Dutch designer Klaas Kuiken created the birdhouse tiles to bring life to otherwise static roof space, and to bring wildlife back into our daily habitats. "Nowadays birds are not welcome anymore under rooftiles," says the designer. The birdhouse roof tiles are also a small but important attempt to acknowledge that the sites of our own homes are often encroaching on natural habitats and could do more to respect the land an ecosystems on which they sit. Here's a way to invite nature back in (and say to birds, "make yourself at home!").
