The Story of…Oops!

safe sunscreens

For those of you who love Annie Leonard's work--The Story of Stuff, The Story of Bottled Water, The Story of Cap and Trade--here is her latest work, The Story of Cosmetics

It's enough to send you running in horror from your personal care products, which, as you will see, are not at all protective of your health. Actually it's the manufacturers and the government agencies charged with keeping us safe, who don't seem to give a whit about what we put on our bodies.

Here I am on vacation slathering my favorite Kiehl's sunscreen on only to find out it contains the potential hormone disruptor oxybenzone that readily penetrates the skin. Oh darn!

Luckily, links on the Stuff website directed me to resources for safe sunscreens. I'm happy to report that Dermalogica Pure Light SPF 30  earns high marks. I've switched and I'm back to the beach.
