Solar LED Bulb for the Developing World
While LED bulbs are starting to go mainstream in the US market, millions of people worldwide still use fuels like kerosene to power simple lamps for light. In the developing world, these low-tech lamps use unrenewable powercan consume a large percentage of a family's income, and produce toxic fumes that are harmful to humans and the planet. In response to this massive problem, Nokero has plans to launch a rainproof, solar-powered LED lightbulb that will be low-cost and rechargable, providing consistent, inexpensive, and clean-powered light to families in the developing world. The bulb consists of 4 solar panels, 5 LEDs, and measures only 5 inches long, providing up to four hours of light. The bulbs currently run for $15 each, but they hope to lower the price to $6 when they reach higher distribution by partnering with nonprofits worldwide.
