The ultimate non-plastic water bottle

July 16, 2009

By now, we should all know not to be buying plastic water bottles (some 38 billion of them are pitched into the landfill each year, not to mention they cost a fortune, comparitively, to completely safe-to-drink tap water, which here in California, costs an average of just 1/6th of a penny per gallon). If you’re the proud owner of a SIGG or Nalgene bottle, thanks for doing your part. If you’re not, here’s the latest innovation that will hopefully tip the scales: EcoUsable has partnered with water filter company Seychelle to bring you the world’s only stainless steel bottle with a built-in water filter that eliminates 99.99% of all microbial, chemical, and dissolved solid contaminants. The Ech2o bottle costs just $39.99 for a 25 oz. bottle- not bad compared to $20+ competitors, which don’t have the filter. Now you have no excuse to be buying plastic bottles: you can have your cake and eat it too (or rather, drink your water, and filter it too).

The snack and soft drinks copamny will use raw materials such as switch grass, pine bark and corn husks, converting them into polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, which is the plastic material used to produce the majority of bottles. So wait, they're taking biodegradable and compostable materials, and converting them into non-biodegradable, non-compostable bottles, creating more trash? How is this a good thing?

This is a great idea but I too would rather have a stainless steel water bottle with a plastic free water filter.

Thanks for offering a great idea. I would like to find a bottle like this, with the filtering system itself also available in non-plastic. Do you know of any products which are completely non-plastic?
