Designers- it's time to Work With Your Hands!

May 28, 2009

One of my peeves with the design world these days is a disconnection with the material, how things come to be, and our human role in creating them. Very few designers build anymore, few tinker, and most days, our first tool is our laptop, not our hands. I came across this article, "The Case for Working With Your Hands," through a few avenues, and have since emailed it to basically everyone I know. The New York Times piece is written by Matthew Crawford, political philospher turned motorcycle mechanic. He testifies to the value of real hard manual labor, over anything conceptual or virtual. "The work is sometimes frustrating, but it is never irrational," he says.

Read the whole article here, and get to work with your hands.
