Artecnica's Design With Conscience Tatu Collection

February 19, 2009

I was recently reminded of Artecnica’s Design With Conscience collections, after a visit to their Los Angeles office. The program pairs world-famous designers with craft communities to both empower new economies and inspire a collaboration between designer and artisan. Stephen Burks’ Tatu collection is a collection of tables and stools made from hand-woven galvanized steel wire. The pieces are flexible and interchangeable (the coffee table can be broken down into a tray, bowl, and basket). Each is made by hand by South African artisans, with whom Stephen worked closely with throughout the design and develoment process.
