City of Dreams Pavilion on Governors Island

Just off of New York City, Governors Island is soon to become an oasis of green enjoyment, kicking off its ongoing green renovations this summer with the milk-crate-and-flora design for the City of Dreams Pavilion Completion! Called the “Living Pavilion," the structure is built from reclaimed milk crates that form the lattice structure for a green roof and edible garden. The entire pavillion will provide both shade and occupiable space for visitors. “Living Pavilion” will be constructed in the courtyard of Liggett Hall on Governors Island this summer. Calling upon the shape of a rolling wave to symbolize growth and life, designers Ann Ha and behrang Behin used a biometic approach to combine simple form and streamlined function (to best accommodate the plants). Living Pavilion will be sited in the courtyard of Liggett Hall on Governors Island and will be open to the public from June 6th until October 3rd of this year. provides many different orientations for solar exposure, allowing for a large variety of plantings with unique needs. The design was chosen as the winner of an annual competition hosted by FIGMENT.
