Is the Hollywood Sign going Solar?!

A few weeks ago, I was in Los Angeles, and heard amidst some event chatter some big plans that the city of LA allegedly had: to green the infamous Hollywood sign by putting solar panels on its front face. I took it upon myself to investigate the real story, and the rumors are, well, half true, but still exciting. Earlier this year, an activist named Mike Bonifer presented the idea at a local gathering of "big thinkers," effectively challenging the city to actually go and do it. The city’s response ranged from "It’s not politically viable" to "No way" to "well, maybe."

"’Solaring The Sign’ struck me as such a beautiful, artful, symbolically powerful idea — what I call in my line of work a ‘productive game’ — that I could not quit thinking about it," says Mike Bonifer, who continues to push the idea through to execution.
