Reclaiming Drawers as New Modern Furniture

December 1, 2009

Swedish design team WIS Design has a new product that is in multiple senses, old. Their Collect chest of drawers (seen above) takes a cornucopia of old chest drawers and builds them into a new frame. The result is a piece of furniture that is both retro and very modern. At a staggering $7200, though, I wonder just how far this "old as new" aesthetic will go. The Collect chest is also very reminiscent of a Droog design from the 90’s, the infamous "You can’t lay down your memory Chest of Drawers" by iconic Tejo Remy (below). Regardless of the price tag, the aesthetic is beautiful, and the statement that we can repurpose our vernacular materials will never go out of style.
