Obama: It's not about the "F-ing" Lightbulbs!

November 11, 2008

Apologies in advance for quoting President-Elect Obama’s use of swear words. In an unscripted moment overheard by Newsweek, Obama speaks about the urgency of global warming, doubting that half-hearted efforts will do the trick:

"…When Brian Williams is asking me about what’s a personal thing that you’ve done [that’s green], and I say, you know, ‘Well, I planted a bunch of trees.’ And he says, ‘I’m talking about personal.’ What I’m thinking in my head is, ‘Well, the truth is, Brian, we can’t solve global warming because I f—ing changed light bulbs in my house. It’s because of something collective’."

Thoughts?

Mr. Obama is f__ing correct. Not that one person can't make a difference, but that we all have to change our behaviors. That means we can't turn things around by creating a better disposable world or getting energy efficient light bulbs for monster homes and huge corner offices. It's time we stopped pretending we can keep making the same old choices just because we used a little less energy and bought recycled materials or recycled our used up materials. We're kidding ourselves into thinking these small gestures will actually change our deadly direction.
