Haik Avanian's ReKnit project

January 11, 2010

It may be because I cannot knit to save my life, but I am currently obsessed with graphic designer Haik Avanian’s ReKnit project, which includes three great components: turning old knitware into something new, next-to-nothing cost, and Haik’s mom. Every month, you can send Haik’s mom an old sweater and $30, and she’ll unravel it, turn it into something new, and send it back to you. This month, she’s making scarves, and on the ReKnit website you can vote on what she should make next month (socks, anyone?). Haik says, "While this project was originally only meant to encourage my mom to partake in her hobby more often, I think it’s also a great way of spreading information about this technique. We’re hoping people see the potential in re-using clothing made from yarn, and maybe start similar projects within their families and communities."
