Ecovative's Green Styrofoam-substitute made from mushrooms

October 19, 2009

This past week, as part of the PopTech Social Innovation Fellows program, I’ve had the privilege of meeting the founder of Ecovative Design, a company that has a truly genius substitute to styrofoam (with both building material and packaging applications). Their technology takes agricultural waste, and combines it with mushroom roots to bond the mixture into a stable material that is similar in texture and performance to traditional synthetic styrofoam. The best part is that it’s totally biodegradable- throw it out your car window and it will decompose. Ecovative can form the material into packaging or building materials. Check out all the details and hear about the process here.

We love to see organic materials used for packaging. In fact, we prefer the look and texture of this packaging over any alternative. Nice job on this product!
