Designs for Dignity

July 27, 2008

So much of interior design caters to those with robust checkbooks, but here’s an organization putting design expertise where it’s needed most. Designs for Dignity, a Chicago-based group and affiliate of the Heartland Alliance, seeks to "heal through design." As a network of donors, designers, and architects, Designs for Dignity redesigns nonprofit offices and spaces that serve basic needs, bringing design sensibility and a sense of home to under-represented places.

I post this for obvious reasons- we as designers can get so caught up in the aesthetic and the business and the clients who write us big checks, but at our core, we designers are merely problem solvers. Let’s apply some of our problem solving skills in places that need the assistance of thoughtful design solutions.

Designs for Dignity has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters, St. Vincent DePaul, and more, and has redesigned spaces for Chicago’s Lakeview Food Pantry, Heartland Alliance’s Sutherland Ballroom (above), La Casa (Lake County Counsel Against Sexual Assault), and may others.

I am truly amazed and am happy to see, that after all there are people who are talented and care. I look forward to one day being able to apply my skills to such an organization. I am still a freshman attending design school. But I look forward to being a part of this type of design.

OMG! This is so excited to find out. I recently returned from a missions trip in Chicago and was really struck with the need to use my interior design knowledge to help the people who can't afford a beautiful home! thank you for what you do! i would love to do an internship with this organization!

This is a great concept: designers with the same professional call to duty as real doctors helping those in need regardless of means.

I'm so happy to learn of this organization. I am considering a career in interior design but was concerned what "good" I could do with it. I did a search on interior design non-profit and found your post. I used to work for Heartland Alliance in Chicago. It's a sign! I'm going to apply.

Designs For Dignity sounds like a wonderful organization. I have been wanting to contribute my Interior Design talents to such causes on Long Island in New York. Keep up the good work! If you have any info on similar organizations in NY, I'd be honored to be involved. Mary Nolte Designs Kaleidoscope Color Consulting

Designs for Dignity is an independent 501c3 organization that provides pro bono interior design services to area nonprofits that serve marginalized and endangered populations. DFD (Designs for Dignity) is a wonderful organization that creates opportunities for non-profit organizations to expand/ enhance their scope of services. I worked on the Boys and Girls Club in Benton Harbor, MI. We designed and installed a new kitchen in cooperation with Kitchen Aid/ Whirlpool, Home Depot, and local contractors. The new kitchen enabled the Boys & Girls Club to serve hot meals to all of the children in the community, who otherwise may not have had dinner.

Designs for Dignity is an amazing organization. I worked on a project in Chicago for Gilda's Club. It was a lot of fun and felt so good to be able to use all the excess materials in the design community for someone who really appreciates it!
