Lulan Artisans Social and Environmentally Friendly Textiles

July 31, 2008

Organic cottons are one thing, but Lulan Artisans takes it a step further to integrate social responsibility and investments in local enterprises into their textile design and production (did we mention the fabrics are gorgeous?). Lulan produces beautiful textiles for interior design applications that are embeddes with a Southeast Asian tradition and culture, made contemporary.

Their business is rooted in "responsible design," economic, cultural, social, and environmental. Their products show craftsmanship and rely on natural processes to bring out natural beauty. All weavers, spinners, dyers, and finishers are paid fairly, their cultures and skills preserved through the traditional production of the textiles.

Lulan also hosts a Sustainable Community Lecture series in various cities- check out the schedule here.

It's quite odd to say that the company is into environmental design when the products are coming from Southeast Asia and the compnay's stores are all in the US. Isn't that a lot of toxic air from international transportation of the materials as a primary logistics approach?
