Eco Earthy Greens

May 15, 2009

With NeoCon just around the corner, new product introductions will start appearing in our inboxes. Here’s one of the first.

Earthy Greens, the newest sustainable fabrics from Sina Pearson Textiles, is comprised of eco-friendly fabrics in two complementary patterns: Big Dots and Eco-Pile. Big Dots incorporates Crypton Green technologies, which offers high performance durability, stain-, odor-, germ- and moisture resistance. It is woven of post-consumer recycled polyester, the manufacture meets strict emissions requirements and is MBDC Cradle to Cradle silver certified.

Eco-Pile is a chunky chenille with a sumptuous, heathery surface, achieved by blending lensing (biodegradable viscose) and post-consumer recycled cotton fibers.  No toxins entered the ground or water table during manufacture. All dyestuffs in the yarn are free of heavy metals.

Sina Pearson Textiles takes great care to create environmentally responsible products. Its Bella-Dura fabrics, for example, begin as a by-product of post-industrial waste and end their life as a 100% recycled product. The European mills all conform to strict standards for emissions, dyeing, weaving and finishing. Since inception, sample box sets and all printed labels are made from recycled/recyclable paper. They donate all discontinued yardage and samples to local charity organizations for use by schools and non-profit arts groups.

Designers will find it useful to browse the website using SPT’s sustainability filter. The eco-fabrics in the line are organized by environmental attribute such as rapidly renewable or recycled content fibers. There’s even an easy-to-use LEED matrix. While handy, remember that textiles can only contribute to achieving LEED points. They are not going to earn them on their own. Nice tool though.
