Torlys Leather Floors: Recycled Gorgeous

March 10, 2010

Getting rid of a favorite pair of old shoes, a worn out handbag, or a no longer wearable leather jacket wouldn’t be so painful if you knew they would find another life—under your feet.

This is the concept behind Torlys Leather Floors— making use of materials that would otherwise find their way to local landfills. Made entirely with recycled materials, this luxurious plank flooring is long lasting, stunning in its look and feel, well priced and good for the environment.

The recycled leather is adhered to a premium HDF (high density fiber) “smart core” made from top quality exterior grade wood with no added formaldehyde. Though not FSC certified, it is made from pre-consumer wood waste scraps. The backing of the smart core is recycled cork, a totally renewable resource and a natural insulator that is also salvaged from pre-consumer waste for extra comfort, warmth, and quietness. This innovative use of cork eliminates the need for an underlay in most cases, saving time and money on installation.

Inspired by the quality of fine Italian leather, the collection of eight different styles available in planks and tiles, has been designed to be very dense and to stand up to the wear and tear of everyday living in all areas of the house with the exception of bathrooms. Best yet, the planks can be re-installed and used up to three times under the same 25-year residential warranty.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the positive response we have received from the design community and consumers who are seeking a highly styled and sustainable alternative flooring,” says Charles Lammers, VP of U.S. Sales for TORLYS. “They love the combination of unique rich looks, durable wear and environmental benefits.”

Hey, aren’t those my Manolo Blahniks down there?

I like the concept of this product. In New England, where I practice, is a hardwood town, still, so I wonder about the longevity of 100 years of Hardwood v 25 of this product. I appreciate the recycled content, the formaldehyde free, but what's the processing like to get the recyled product to make like a plank? Dyeing of leather? So typically toxic. Anyone know about the manufacturing process? AbbeyK www.oninteriordesign.com

Recycling or re-using materials to prevent them from ending up in landfills is always a bright idea. Check out Crossville's new Tile Take-Back Program where they recycle previously-used tile to reduce environmental waste: www.crossvilleinc.com/tiletakeback.html

I saw these at a flooring store here in Portland, Oregon. I think they are beautiful. I think if a creature gives it's life for us, it is important for us to use the products resourcefully and completely. Love that this keeps items out of the landfill and does it beautifully. I was thrilled to read this article about this new innovative idea. Who would have thought that you could have the luxury and comfort underfoot. I have been in home improvements and diy and i think this could be the next best thing, it might even rival laminate flooring. Regards Kevin www.homediyimprovements.com/blog
