American Pride

May 20, 2009

A traditional staple of American home furnishings has gone greener with its latest introduction.

Ethan Allen crafts the American Artisan collection in its plants in Vermont and North Carolina. Made from responsibly harvested Appalachian lumber with eco-friendly water-based finishes, the collection includes tables, seating, beds and storage pieces. The workers, as noted by the company, “are a unique breed of storyteller – relaying their intricate tales through the furnishings they hand turn, score, or finish. Often the forgotten heroes of our industry, these workers hone their art while nurturing their responsibility to the environment – and are proud to be a part of a patriotic company that strives to keep the American worker working.”

Adhering to a corporate commitment to sustainable forestry, Ethan Allen uses native hardwood species that naturally regenerate and tropical hardwoods from legally harvested sources. They own very little timberland but work with professional foresters who share their belief that "our future depends on healthy, well-managed forests."

Integrated company-wide environment, health, and safety initiatives include waste minimization, pollution prevention, recycling programs, energy conservation as well as deep involvement in the communities where they have manufacturing facilities. Led by chairman, CEO and president Farooq Kathwari, known for his humanitarian efforts, Ethan Allen’s corporate citizenship and environmental story is impressive and worthy of your attention.
