Tierra: A LEEDing Product

August 14, 2009

Armstrong has introduced its greenest ceiling yet – Tierra – with a high potential to contribute to LEED points and an ease in achieving and documenting them.

This new addition to the Armstrong line features a substrate they’ve branded “BioAcoustic” to reflect both its environmental and superior acoustical properties.Made from jute, a natural fiber that grows from seed to harvest in just ninety days, Tierra is 45 percent rapidly renewable, the highest in the industry. Installation of the panels in an Armstrong high-recycled content suspension system maximizes the ceiling system’s environmental benefits and LEED MR 6 contribution.

Tierra is also recyclable at the end of its service life through the Armstrong Ceiling Recycling Program, which will aid in achieving MR 2 points, and has a high post-consumer recycled content of 23 percent, contributing to LEED MR 4 credits. Its light reflectance value of 0.88 helps save energy, and with no added urea formaldehyde, Tierra is a low-emitting material. For LEED for Schools projects its NCR of 0.85 will meet the acoustics requirements. In addition, Tierra has attained MBDC Cradle to Cradle Silver certification that can earn an innovation credit.

To make LEED documentation as effortless as possible, Armstrong’s Green Genie Tool researches and calculates Tierra’s sustainable contributions to LEED certification during the design and submittal project phases. Easy!
