Greenplay: Safe for the kids, safe for the planet

Kids don’t worry about their health and safety when they play; that’s left to parents, teachers and others who have them in their care. Greenplay, a modular furniture system especially designed for healthcare, schools, libraries and retail facilities, worries as well about the little people who use its product.

No manufacturer can prevent scraped knees or bruises, but Greenplay does its best to make sure no harm comes from the furniture itself. It has made every effort to eliminate hazardous substances from its products by using vegetable-based stains and urea formaldehyde-free composite wood. All Greenplay forest products comply with California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements. The finishes are low- or no- VOC emitters and free of industrial grade solvents. Kids can chew on this stuff, and probably will.

Greenplay’s design and manufacturing protocols also protect the planet in multiple and impressive ways. The materials include FSC-certified wood veneers and recycled HDPE (high density polyethylene) from various and primarily post consumer sources.

As a modular system it can be reconfigured as needs change and comes with a take-back program that allows all components to be repurposed, refurbished or donated to charities. The components are engineered to pack and ship flat in recyclable packaging that already contains recycled content.

Greenplay, a division of Skyline Design, sought to minimize its carbon footprint as much as possible by taking a top-to-bottom approach in developing the product. As noted on its website, “It’s a challenging responsibility to defend our planet’s resources while creating beautiful children’s furniture. Greenplay sees it as an opportunity to change the way we use—and reuse—the valuable assets our earth provides us and create safe palettes for the imaginative minds that depend on them the most—our children.”
