The Greenest Move Ever

April 9, 2010

Today’s post is, by necessity, brief. I’m in Texas helping my daughter move to a new home. Kudos to her. This is, quite possibly, the greenest move I’ve ever seen. She’s asked her wonderful circle of friends to join the laundry basket brigade. Over a two-day period, they came with their laundry baskets and file boxes. We emptied out cabinets and closets in the old house, drove them over to the new house, put things away, drove back and started the process again. This move—from one five-bedroom house to another—used ONE roll of bubble wrap and NO cardboard boxes. Amazing!

Of course, there will be lunches, dinners and gifts for the friends—gladly given. There are so many ways to reduce our environmental footprint. This is just one.

I don't mean to be picky but reusing cardboard boxes and papper wrapping (like I did when I moved twice this year) and making only 1 or 2 trips would have saved a lot in pollution from the multiple car trips. And, since the boxes can be recycled to other movers (and in my case were made from recycled materials to begin with), I think that would be a far greener way to move.

I agree with Superficial Green. It probably would have been less stressful on the environment to scavenge boxes (there are free ads on Craigslist every day!) and make one trip than to drive back and forth two dozen times. "A" for effort though!

I really like the idea of the laundry basket brigade but isn't the use of "scavenged" boxes also green? It takes a bit of coordination and saving boxes but when we moved our neighbors must have thought "Fresh Direct" was a moving company!

What a wonderful idea, this is something I will share with my clients as they are always packing up their kitchens before we start work

A good idea and initiative to reduce the environmental impacts of our actions, but this eco post falls flat. The gathering of a series of hand-me-down boxes (recyclable and reusable no less) from a local merchant in one trip are much less taxing on the environment than the exhaust released from the numerous car trips needed to rally and drop off all these hampers and file boxes.
